So, here we are on our journey about Stoicism, what it teaches us to be and how we can inculcate the principles and teachings into our lives to live in the finest attainable way we can.
Stoicism was followed by many in ancient times but there were a notable few who made an impact with how they followed being a stoic and how they impacted others with what they learnt about the philosophy of stoicism.
Most of what I’ve read or watched about Stoicism principally mentioned the below few teachers and their lessons and we will realize that there is a reason why they are deemed as one of the best teachers.
Zeno(c. 334 — c. 262 BCE)
Zeno of Citium was the founder of the Stoic school. A merchant following his father during his early days, took up Philosophy after he got stranded in Athens after a shipwreck. He got inspired by the teachings of Socrates from a book called Memorabilia, given to him by a student of Socrates called Xenophon. He wanted to focus and pursue philosophy at the expense of giving up his profession as a merchant and eventually he set up his school where he taught stoic principles and values to his students.
Zeno says that “ To pursue pleasure as the meaning of life, and to think that one is living well, is to be no more than an animal.”
