Today in this episode of Movie Snippets, I am going to recommend you the movie Sound of Metal.

Directed by Darius Marder, Sound of Metal is a movie about Ruben, a drummer played by Riz Ahmed, whose hearing ability diminishes partially and eventually becomes deaf.

He and his girlfriend Lou played by Olivia Cooke, reach out to a rehabilitation centre where he’ll be taught how to accept his disability positively and to learn to live with it.

The rehab centre which is run by Joe played by Paul Raci gives insights on how to deal with his deafness by asking him to sit in an empty room with just a pen and paper and something to eat to write about his feelings.

This movie is no doubt run on the shoulders of Riz Ahmed, who delivers one of my favourite performances of all time, he had to learn to play the drums in 6 months and had to learn American Sign Language for the role, more often than not the movie involves you into the story and life of Ruben. His eyes emote his expressions more than his words and it never feels like he’s overdoing it but rather delivering a genuinely powerful performance.

The other half of the movie runs on the exceptional sound design wherein the audience gets to know what Ruben goes through and the hauntingly intense silences make you realize things that most of us take for granted.

My favourite scene in the movie is the last scene when Ruben realizes that he can’t change what his implants do to his hearing of the outside world and pulls out his hearing device and sits in the silence of his world and his mind with that.

Please watch the movie and let me know what you felt about it in the comments section.
