I’m often asked how to write a simple story. It’s an easy question to answer, but it’s hard to do justice to.

So, what’s the point of a story? To entertain? To make your reader think? To change their lives?

For me, a story is about creating a space where people can get lost in something bigger than themselves, even if that something is only conjured up in their minds from the words on a page.

There are many ways of storytelling. There is one that a Pulitzer Prize-winning author used, and then there is the usual way most people tell stories — how we narrate our stories to our children or how many business seminars use case studies to exert their point.

It’s how we tell it and how the readers perceive it.

So you have an idea for a story. You’ve been thinking about it for a while, and now you’re ready to write. Or maybe you’re not. You don’t know where to start.

The best stories are crafted from a combination of elements that engage our senses and create an emotional response.

There is no one way to approach writing a story. Like how we feel about life, it is subjective. What moves someone will most likely not affect you and vice versa.
